The ‘Build It and They Will Come Syndrome’
I really love this saying…’Build it and They Will Come’. You know why? Because it says it as it is…and it has a lot to do with Email Marketing. Read below and you’ll see what I mean:
Over the past few years, I’ve been asked the following question by some of my clients: ‘Why should I take the time and work on an Email Marketing Newsletter? What’s the purpose? I don’t really like to write and anyway, my customers know me, so what’s the point?’ To which, I give them the following answer:
OK, we’re talking Brick & Mortar here. You’ve just opened your new store called ‘Kitchen Gadgets Inc.’ and you sell pots & pans, cookbooks, and yes, kitchen gadgets. All your merchandise is neatly presented, & you’ve told everybody from friends of friends to family about your new venture…Now, what? What I’m trying to say is this: Where will you find new customers? How are you going to market your business? Sit there, and just wait for somebody to show up? Let’s get back to your new store: ‘Kitchen Gadgets Inc.’ What will you do to advertise your products and services? Put an ad in the local newspaper, Radio, TV maybe?

Let’s get back to your new store: ‘Kitchen Gadgets Inc.’ What will you do to advertise your products and services? Put an ad in the local newspaper, Radio, TV maybe? And what are you going to offer in this ad? I mean, you do want to sell don’t you?
Here’s a Marketing Plan for You
Let’s say you decide to use your local Newspaper and put in an ad that says: If you visit my store on the first Saturday of the month, you will receive a free cookbook in exchange for your name and home address. No need to buy anything! Just show up at the store, do a bit of browsing, and pick up your free cookbook!
OK, that seems a bit radical…No? And what’s the reason behind this madness? You want this info because this is part of your Marketing Campaign as you will be sending your new Subscribers a Monthly Newsletter by Snail Mail. (Remember, this is a Brick and Mortar situation we’re talking about)
What Will You Write About in Your Newsletter?
Great all went well, and you now have 200 new Subscribers. What is your next step? Get your Newsletter out there! What’s your offer? Well to start, you will write an article for your Newsletter about the benefices of let’s say…Steaming veggie versus boiling them.
Remember, your store sells merchandise related to cooking. When you publish your Newsletter, you will also insert a Discount Coupon applicable to the purchase of this one of a kind ‘Steamer’ you carry in your store. You are presently promoting this type of Veggie Steamer, and the reduction in price is only good on presentation of the Discount Coupon, that your Subscribers received with their Newsletter.
See what’s happening here?
You are in contact with your existing and new customers through the medium of your Newsletter. You are keeping them up to date on your services and products. You are also building a relationship with your subscribers!
By doing so, you are increasing the chances that your new subscribers will become new customers and as such make sure, that your current customers remain loyal to your company!
Is Email Marketing a Good Thing?
Let me ask you: Inside the last 30 days, how many times have you ‘contacted’ your customers? I’m not talking about sending out an invoice or a few Tweets. What I mean by this, is the following:
- Maybe you have expanded your business, and are now offering new services that would be helpful to them?
- How about that new EBook that you’re promoting on your website? Have you sent an email to your customers to let them know about it?
- What field do you specialize in? Do you have any tips and expert knowledge you would like to share with your customers?
- Do you blog? If so, do you share with your customers those tantalizing bits of knowledge and know how? Or do you just sit there and hope somebody will read it?
As you can see, there are many uses to Email Marketing, and these are only a few examples! Create a Newsletter with your latest blog post, and engage your customers to comment and become part of your business! Add a Subscription box to your website, and expand your reach!
